Hair porosity guide: low, medium and high porosity care

Guide last checked: 20 July 2026

Ever wondered why an oil that transforms your friend’s hair does almost nothing for yours? The answer is usually porosity. It is one of the most useful things you can learn about your hair, and almost nobody teaches it.

Porosity is simply how easily your hair takes in and holds on to moisture. Once you know yours, shopping for products stops being a guessing game.

The three porosity types

Match the richness of your products to your type.

QuestionTypeHow it behaves
LowCuticles lie flat and tightSlow to get wet and dry; loves light, warm oils
MediumRelaxed and balancedEasy-going; most routines work
HighCuticles more openDrinks and loses moisture fast; loves sealing creams

What porosity actually means

Every strand of hair has an outer layer called the cuticle. Picture roof tiles lying over each other. How tightly or loosely those tiles sit decides how water and product move in and out of the hair. That is porosity.

It is mostly down to your natural hair and how it has been treated over the years. Once you know your type, you can work with your hair instead of fighting it.

The easy at-home porosity test

You need a glass of water and one clean strand of hair. Take a strand of freshly washed hair, with no product on it, and drop it into the glass.

Watch for a couple of minutes. Floats on top means low porosity. Hovers in the middle means medium. Sinks to the bottom means high porosity.

How to care for each type

Low porosity: warmth is your friend. Apply a lighter oil like Hair Growth Oil to warm, damp hair, cleanse gently so product does not build up, and keep leave-ins light.

Medium porosity: most routines work. Condition regularly and enjoy the occasional Protein Hair Pack for bounce.

High porosity: seal it in. Smooth the Jasmine Hair Butter through damp mid-lengths and ends, use a weekly pack, and finish with a little butter to tame frizz.

A simple routine that works for everyone

Whatever your porosity, three habits keep hair looking its best. Oil before you wash, cleanse gently, and seal the ends with the right-weight leave-in.

Adjust the richness to your porosity and you are set.

FAQ

Can my hair porosity change?

Your natural porosity is fairly stable. Styling and heat over the years can open the cuticle, but gentle care and regular conditioning keep it in great shape.

Is low or high porosity better?

Neither. They are just different. Each has an easy routine that makes it look and feel wonderful once you know the trick.

What products suit high-porosity hair best?

Rich, sealing leave-ins like a hair butter, plus regular conditioning packs. The goal is to lock moisture in.

Why does my hair take so long to dry?

That is a classic low-porosity sign. The tight cuticle that keeps water out also keeps it in, so drying takes longer. Warm-applied products help.
