Multani mitti face packs, explained

Reviewed by the VEETREE Editorial Team (Updated 5 July 2026)

Multani mitti has been in Indian homes for generations - a soft clay from Multan that grandmothers swore by for oily, sticky summer skin. It earns its place: few natural ingredients soak up oil as well.

This guide covers what it actually does, how to mix and apply it, who should use it, who should skip it, and when a grain ubtan is the better pick.

What multani mitti actually does

Multani mitti (Fuller’s earth) is an absorbent clay. On skin, it works like a sponge: it drinks up extra oil, lifts sweat and grime out of pores, and leaves the surface feeling clean and matte.

That is the whole trick - absorption. It does not bleach, peel, or change your skin colour. The fresher look after a clay pack comes from clean, oil-free skin catching the light better.

How to mix and apply it at home

1. Take 1 to 2 spoons of multani mitti in a clean bowl.

2. Mix with rose water (or plain water) into a smooth, lump-free paste. For very oily skin, some people add a little neem or tulsi water.

3. Apply a thin, even layer to a clean face, avoiding the eyes and lips.

4. Leave it for 10 to 15 minutes. Rinse with lukewarm water before it cracks and flakes - bone-dry clay pulls at the skin.

5. Follow with a light moisturiser or gel. Use 1 to 2 times a week, not daily.

Oily skin vs dry skin

Oily and combination skin: this is where multani mitti shines. Weekly use helps with that greasy, end-of-day film and can make pores look cleaner.

Dry or sensitive skin: be careful. Clay absorbs oil your skin may not have to spare, and can leave it tight and flaky. If you still want to try it, mix with milk or aloe vera gel instead of water, keep it to 10 minutes, and moisturise well after.

Multani mitti pack or a grain ubtan?

Clay packs and ubtan packs get mixed up, but they work differently. Clay absorbs oil; an ubtan - the traditional blend of grains, lentils and herbs - gently polishes away dull, dead surface skin while grains like green gram and oats are far kinder to moisture levels.

A simple rule: oily skin in humid weather, reach for clay. Dull, tired or normal-to-dry skin, reach for an ubtan. VEETREE’s Face Brightening Pack is a grain-and-lentil ubtan - green gram, oats, masoor dal, licorice, manjistha and avarampoo - built for the second job: lifting dullness without drying the skin out.

Side effects and honest limits

Used too often, multani mitti over-dries the skin, which can trigger flaking - and on oily skin, sometimes even more oil as the skin compensates. Once or twice a week is plenty.

Patch test first if your skin is reactive. Stop if you feel burning or see redness that lasts. And treat any "clay whitens skin" claim as marketing - it does not, and nothing cosmetic should promise that.

FAQ

Can I use a multani mitti face pack daily?

No. Daily clay strips too much oil and leaves skin tight and flaky. One to two times a week is enough for oily skin; even less for normal skin.

Does multani mitti make skin fairer?

No. It removes oil and surface grime, so skin looks fresher and cleaner - but it does not change your natural skin colour, and no honest face pack does.

What should I mix multani mitti with?

Rose water is the classic mixer and suits most skin. Dry skin does better with milk or aloe vera gel. Avoid lemon juice - it can sting and irritate.

How long should I keep it on?

10 to 15 minutes, and rinse before it dries completely. A pack that cracks and powders on your face has been on too long.

Is multani mitti good for dry skin?

Usually not - clay absorbs the oil dry skin needs. A grain ubtan pack, mixed with something hydrating, is the gentler way to get the same fresh, polished feel.

Multani mitti or ubtan - which is better for glowing skin?

For oily-skin freshness, clay. For dull, tired-looking skin, an ubtan polishes better without drying. Many people use clay in humid months and an ubtan the rest of the year.
